- Q. Which format should I choose — JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF?
- A. JPG works well for photographs, and PNG for logos or icons that need a transparent background. For images going on a website, WebP or AVIF is better: at the same visual quality the file is smaller than JPG, so pages load faster. AVIF compresses the most, while WebP has broader compatibility.
- Q. Does converting reduce image quality?
- A. With PNG, WebP, and AVIF set to quality 100 there is virtually no visible loss. JPG is lossy by design, so lowering the quality does degrade the image — use the quality slider to balance file size against fidelity. After converting, the percentage saved versus the original is shown.
- Q. How do I make an image file smaller?
- A. Combine three things: switch the format to WebP or AVIF, lower the quality to somewhere between 80 and 90, and resize down to the pixel dimensions you actually need. y2x lets you set all three on one screen.

- Q. What happens to a transparent background when I convert PNG to JPG?
- A. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. If you need to keep the transparent background, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
- Q. Do WebP and AVIF open everywhere?
- A. Every current browser opens both. Older software and older devices may not, so if the file is being sent to someone else or attached to a document, JPG or PNG is the safer choice.
